What the Webster Technique Actually Does During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most common times we hear the question, “Is chiropractic care actually safe for me right now?” The short answer is yes — and for many expecting moms, it becomes one of the most valuable parts of their prenatal routine. But it’s worth explaining exactly what we’re doing, because “adjusting a pregnant woman” sounds a lot scarier than it actually is.

As pregnancy progresses, hormonal changes loosen ligaments throughout the body, including those supporting the pelvis. This is a normal and necessary part of preparing for birth — but it can also lead to uneven tension in the pelvis and surrounding muscles and ligaments, which may create nerve interference and discomfort. Ask Dr. Gordon or Dr. Lesley about Webster technique specifically developed to assess and balance the pelvis during pregnancy.

The Webster Technique uses a gentle, specific analysis to identify areas of tension or misalignment in the pelvis and sacrum. From there, we use light, precise adjustments — nothing forceful, nothing that resembles the “twisting and cracking” people sometimes picture — to help restore balance. The goal is to reduce nervous system interference in this area, which can support:

  • More comfortable pregnancy, especially in the low back and hips
  • Better function of the nerves and muscles supporting the pelvic region
  • An environment that allows the baby the best possible room to move into an optimal position for birth

This last point is often what draws expecting moms to ask about it in the first place. While no technique can guarantee a specific outcome, many patients tell us that consistent Webster care throughout their pregnancy made a real difference in their comfort and confidence heading into delivery.

We treat every trimester differently, adjusting our approach, positioning, and pressure as the pregnancy progresses. If you’re expecting and haven’t considered chiropractic care as part of your prenatal team, we’d love to talk through what that could look like for you.
