Scoliosis Care

dad holding a boy flying a kiteScoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that begins as a postural distortion, and if it’s left unaddressed, it can become a permanent deformity. There are three recognized causes: congenital (a genetic predisposition), habitual (behavioural routines), and idiopathic (no known cause).

Are There Obvious Clues?

A parent might notice a high shoulder or low hip that makes clothing fit strangely, or uneven wear on their child’s shoes. Kids with scoliosis sometimes experience back and leg pain too, though it’s often brushed off as ordinary “growing pains.”

Wait and See?

Left to just run its course, scoliosis often gets worse over time. In more severe cases, a child may end up needing a cumbersome brace, or surgery involving steel rods to force the spine straight.

Our Natural Approach

Chiropractic adjustments can help improve the spine’s structure and function. Because adjustments can also help strengthen and retrain the surrounding muscles, your child’s posture may improve as a result. If you think your child (or you) may have scoliosis, we’d recommend coming in for an evaluation so we can determine honestly whether we think we can help, meet the doctors who’ll be doing that evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t some sideways curvature normal?

No, any sideways curvature is considered abnormal. Viewed from behind, a healthy spine should appear straight. With scoliosis, there are typically two curves, a primary curve in one direction and a compensatory curve in the other.

When does scoliosis require care?

Experts don’t fully agree. Most surgeons recommend surgery only once curvature reaches 40 degrees or more, while smaller curves, in the 10-25 degree range, aren’t generally considered to need surgical intervention.

Do heavy backpacks cause scoliosis?

Not necessarily, though it’s a growing concern. It’s worth making sure your child uses both shoulder straps so weight distributes evenly, and keeping their backpack under about 10-15% of their body weight is a good rule of thumb.
