If you spend your workday at a desk, you’ve probably felt it: that tight, aching pull at the base of your neck by mid-afternoon, or the headache that seems to start right between your shoulder blades. Desk-related neck pain is one of the most common complaints we see at Bruce Street Family Chiropractic, and while regular adjustments play a big role in correcting the underlying issue, what you do between visits matters too.
Here’s the thing about “tech neck” or desk-related tension: it’s rarely just a muscle problem. Hours of forward head posture — the position most of us default to while looking at a screen — shifts the way the cervical spine bears load and can create stress on the nerves that exit through that area. That’s why the same posture pattern that causes a stiff neck can also be connected to headaches, shoulder tension, and even that foggy, drained feeling by end of day.
A few habits we recommend to patients dealing with desk-related neck tension:
- Set a movement reminder. Every 30-45 minutes, stand, stretch your arms overhead, and gently roll your shoulders back.
- Chin tucks. Gently draw your chin straight back (like making a small double chin) and hold for 5 seconds, 10 reps. This helps counter the forward-head posture screens encourage.
- Screen height check. Your monitor’s top edge should sit at or just below eye level so you’re not tilting your head down for hours at a time.
- Notice your “stress neck.” Many people unconsciously tense their shoulders and neck when concentrating or stressed — a quick body-scan check-in a few times a day can help you catch and release it.
These habits support the correction we’re doing in-office, but they’re not a substitute for it. If the underlying joint restriction and nervous system interference aren’t addressed directly, stretching alone tends to offer temporary relief rather than lasting change. That’s where regular chiropractic care comes in — identifying and correcting the actual source of the tension, not just managing the symptom.
If desk-related neck pain has become part of your daily routine, let’s take a proper look and build a plan that actually gets to the root of it.
