How Should I Use My Pillow?

A pillow can be a very personal thing — there isn’t a single perfect pillow that works for everyone. Here are a few things to consider before purchasing one.

Start with good sleeping habits. The worst position to sleep in is on your stomach. Side sleeping is best, with back sleeping as the next best option. Your mattress matters too — ask us for guidance on what’s right for you.

Choosing a Pillow

There are many kinds of pillows — contour, foam, down, feathered, and more. The most expensive option isn’t necessarily the best. You may need to try a few pillows before finding the right one. Once you do, consider buying a spare in case it’s discontinued when it’s time to replace it.

Positioning Your Pillow

  • Side sleeping: your pillow should fill the space between your shoulder and head, keeping your spine parallel to the bed.
  • Back sleeping: your head should be raised only about 10 to 15 degrees.
  • Broad-shouldered, or need a noticeably thicker pillow on your side than your back? A contour pillow may help — ask at the front desk for details.
