As families gear up for another school year, most of the back-to-school checklist is about supplies and schedules. But there’s one item that rarely makes the list, and it matters more than a new lunch box: how your child’s spine and nervous system handle the sudden shift back into desks, backpacks, and hours of sitting.
At Bruce Street Family Chiropractic, we look at posture as more than an appearance issue. The spine houses and protects the nervous system, which is the master control center for how the whole body functions, heals, and adapts. When a child spends the school year hunched over a backpack that’s too heavy, or slouched at a desk that doesn’t fit them, that posture pattern isn’t just cosmetic. Over time it can create tension and altered movement in the spine, known as vertebral subluxation, that may interfere with healthy nervous system communication.
Here’s our practical checklist for the new school year:
- Weigh the backpack. As a general guide, a loaded backpack shouldn’t exceed about 10-15% of your child’s body weight.
- Check both straps are worn. One-shoulder carrying creates uneven loading through the spine and shoulders.
- Look at desk height. Feet should rest flat, knees roughly level with hips, and screens at eye level when possible.
- Watch for warning signs. Headaches, one shoulder sitting higher than the other, or complaints of “tired” backs after school are worth a look.
- Build in movement breaks. Growing spines aren’t designed for hours of stillness — regular movement supports healthy nervous system function.
This is exactly the kind of thing our chiropractors are trained to assess. Using tools like our CLA INSiGHT™ scans, we can get an objective picture of how a child’s nervous system is functioning — not guesswork, but data we can track over time. Many families are surprised to learn that gentle, kid-appropriate chiropractic checkups can catch small stress patterns in a growing spine long before they turn into bigger complaints.
If you’re heading into the school year and want a baseline check for your child, we’d love to see your whole family. Give us a call to book — early detection is always easier than correction.
